On Tuesday in Mesa, Arizona, an auto accident occurred that injured four people, when an elderly woman drove through a fabric store by mistake.
The crash took place shortly before 10:30 a.m. yesterday morning, at the Jo-Ann fabric store located in the Buckhorn Shopping Center, near Recker Road and Main Street.
Mesa Police Department spokesman, Sergeant Tony Landato, stated that a 78-year-old woman was sitting in her Toyota SUV, which she thought was in park, in the parking lot outside the fabric store, when she accidently drove the car into the store, hitting at least four women who were inside the store.
According to Sgt. Landato, the victims, three customers and an employee, were all gathered around a cash register when the SUV came smashing through.
One of the victims, an 89-year-old woman, was transported to the hospital with life-threatening injuries and was said to have been in surgery earlier today.
The other three victims were injured as well, with two of them suffering serious and potentially life-threatening injuries. They were transported to the hospital by ambulance.
Mesa police are still investigating the incident, but detectives indicated that they do not suspect impairment to have played a role in the crash, and that further, this will not be treated as a criminal investigation.
