On Thursday, a woman from Phoenix, Arizona was arrested and booked for the wrongful death of her daughter, a 6-year-old baby girl.
According to Sergeant Tommy Thompson, on April 8 of this year, the Phoenix Police Department received a call regarding a 6-day-old infant that was found not breathing.
Officers responded to a home near 52nd Street and Thunderbird Road to find an unresponsisve baby Maya Kostinen. She was transported to the hospital, where she was pronounced dead.
Sgt. Thompson said that he mother, 36-year-old Nina Koistinen, initially told investigatories that she had fallen asleep while in bed nursing Maya. Her husband apparently was the one who discovered the lifeless infant under her arm.
The autopsy showed there to be, however, possible signs of suffocation, and this prompted a closer look at the parents by homicide detectives, leading them to a review of Child Protective Services records.
According to court documents, Koistinen had reportedly stated in the past to CPS, after an apparently intentional auto accident, that she has had urges to smother some of her kids. She also mentioned something about wanting her children to go to heaven.
Detectives questioned the the mother again, and this time she admitted to smothering the baby, saying that she just had too many children already. She further stated that she had become jealous of the attention that her husband was showing Maya.
The police report indicates that the mother was put in an interview room with her husband, the baby's father, where she revealed to him that she had pinched Maya's nose, while twisting, suffocating and smothing her.
The alleged murderer will be facing the charge of first-degree murder for the death of her child.
