Earlier today, a multiple-car accident on a Phoenix freeway was triggered when the driver of a hearse passed out behind the wheel while en route to a funeral.
The 6-car pile up crash took place this morning on the Loop 101 freeway near 64th Street.
Arizona Department of Public Safety spokesman Tim Case said that when the hearse driver passed out, his front seat passenger took action, grabbing the directional wheel and trying to steer the hearse out of traffic and onto the right side of the freeway.
After the incident, the driver of the hearse as well as a driver from one of the other cars were transported to separate hospitals. One was taken to the Mayo Clinic and one to Scottsdale Healthcare Osborn Trauma Center. Which driver went where is unclear at this time.
The hearse was reportedly carry a casket which contained the body of the person whose funeral the hearse driver was on his way to.
More details about how exactly the crash occurred and why the hearse driver lost consciousness are not immediately available and the AZ DPS have stated that the investigation is ongoing.
This is certainly an unfortunate incident, and in the worst of situations. As a longtime Phoenix car accident lawyer, I have never seen an accident involving a hearse driver. It is a truly freaky occurence and it just goes to show that you never know what is going to happen on any given day while out on those Arizona roads.
Our thoughts, here at our Phoenix car accident law firm, are with the victims' families and we hope for their speedy and full recoveries.

Such a terrible news. I don't know how many days we have to see such accidents. I think that this is the time to do something to this accident.
